Service types in Karbon let you categorize work to align with how your firm delivers services. Plus, contact segmentation is now available to all customers after successful beta testing.
Service types
Karbon now includes service types, a new way to categorize and manage work types. This addition allows you to align your workflow in Karbon with how you sell and deliver services for smoother and more intuitive operations.
Key benefits:
Improved organization: Group multiple work types under broader service types to reflect your firm's offerings (e.g. ‘Tax Services’ can include ‘Individual Tax Returns’ and ‘Corporate Tax Preparation’).
Customizable relationships: Edit and manage the mapping between service types and work types to fit your firm's unique needs.
Future-ready: Laying the groundwork for upcoming enhancements, service types are a client facing-field that will be visible to clients on engagements and in the Karbon for Clients portal.
How it works:
A new Service Types tab in Workflow Settings allows users to add, edit, or delete service types.
Each work type can be linked to a single service type—or none if the work type is internal-facing.
Pre-populated mappings for new firms ensure a smooth onboarding process. Existing firms will also receive pre-populated service types, but mapping them to work types will require a one-time setup.
Service types are visible as read-only fields in work items and templates for easy reference.
When work is created, the service type linked to the work type will automatically be added to the associated contact. You can also add service types to contacts manually. This makes it possible to filter for service type across contacts and workflows.
Coming soon
In the near future, you will be able to add service types to contacts in bulk using the Bulk Contact Update file.

Time & materials invoice updates
New time or expenses added after an invoice is drafted will now be automatically carried forward. You can include these via checkboxes and the Include button.
When editing an approved invoice, the draft will retain its original values, with new time automatically carried forward.
The Final Invoice toggle has been removed for time and materials invoices to reduce confusion. Write-ons/offs are always calculated, and carried or future time remains unbilled until the next invoice.
