Report: Tech-forward accounting firms generate 28% more revenue per employee than cautious adopters
Two-year study from Karbon links technology mindset to stronger firm performance as AI adoption accelerates and agents emerge as a new source of capacity.
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 26, 2026 – Karbon, the leading AI-powered accounting practice management software, today released The State of Technology in Accounting 2027, a new report that details how accounting firms use technology. Among U.S. firms, the report found that a typical tech-forward accounting firm generates 28% more revenue per employee than a more cautious firm.
The report defines progressive firms or tech-forward firms as those that adopt new technology early or once its value is proven, while cautious firms adopt later or wait until technology becomes an established standard.
Drawing on more than 1,200 survey responses collected over two years, the research examines how technology adoption is shaping firm performance, how accounting firms are consolidating operational work within practice management systems, and how AI agents are emerging as a new source of capacity.
AI becomes standard infrastructure for accounting firms
As AI adoption accelerates across accounting firms, the typical progressive U.S. firm generates more revenue per employee than its more cautious counterpart. The research also examines how firms are incorporating AI into their workflows, both through software they already own and by adding frontier models:
The performance gap between progressive and cautious firms is widening.
Among U.S. firms surveyed in both years, typical revenue per employee increased 9.5% for progressive firms, while remaining unchanged for cautious firms.AI has become a standard part of accounting firms' technology stacks.
Nearly nine in 10 firms (86.7%) now use at least one AI tool.Firms are incorporating AI into their existing technology stacks.
Nearly half (48%) access AI through software they already own, and 97.8% of those firms also use frontier AI models.
“The firms pulling ahead are the ones willing to rethink how they work,” said Mary Delaney, CEO of Karbon. “AI is accessible to everyone, but there's a big difference between adopting a new tool and making it a part of how an accounting firm operates. The firms that are willing to experiment, adapt, and challenge the way they've always done things will be better positioned for what's ahead.”
